From Idea to Final Prototype: My Mini Bowler Bag Journey
Designing the Mini Bowler Bag has been one of those projects that really tested my patience, skills, and attention to detail - but in the best way possible.
What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a process of trial, error, and constant refinement. In total, it took five prototypes to reach a version I’m truly proud of - and along the way, I learned so much about both the design and the making process.
I filmed a video talking through this entire journey, including the decisions, challenges, and key details that shaped the final design.
You can watch it here:
Where It All Began
Initially, I approached this design thinking it would be something I could construct using a domestic sewing machine. It seemed straightforward enough at the time - but very quickly, I realised the structure and finish I wanted just weren’t achievable that way.

That’s when I made the decision to switch to hand stitching.
It completely changed the direction of the project, but ultimately gave me the level of control and precision the design needed.
The Evolution of the Design
Each prototype brought new insights, and with each version, I made small but important changes:
I moved from flat handles to rolled handles, which gave the bag a more refined and professional look.

I adjusted the size of the handle leaf to improve both proportion and strength.

I discovered that glue application had to be incredibly precise - especially around the zip - to avoid any discolouration. I also increased the size of the base to improve the look, functionality and balance.

Finally, I altered the base so it flicked out slightly more, giving the bag a stronger shape and presence.

Every one of these changes meant going back to the pattern and refining it. It was a slow process, but each adjustment brought the design closer to what I had envisioned.
The Final Result
After five iterations, I finally arrived at a version that feels right.
It’s always a great feeling when a design reaches that point - where everything comes together, and you’re no longer thinking about what needs to change, but instead appreciating what you’ve created.
This Mini Bowler Bag is now a design I’m genuinely proud of - not just because of how it looks, but because of everything I learned along the way.
